Golden Lane
Prague’s Street of Stories
8/12/20251 min read
Tucked away inside the walls of Prague Castle, Golden Lane (Zlatá ulička) is one of the most enchanting streets in the city — a narrow row of tiny, brightly painted houses that seem frozen in time. Built in the late 16th century for the castle’s guards, these charming homes became a refuge for craftsmen, goldsmiths, and artists over the centuries, which is how the lane earned its name.
Walking down Golden Lane feels like stepping into a fairy tale. The houses, some barely wide enough for a single room, are now small museums and shops filled with medieval armor, handmade crafts, and historical displays. Each one tells a different story — from the alchemist legends to the life of castle marksmen.

One of its most famous residents was Franz Kafka, who rented house No. 22 in 1916. Today, visitors can peek inside and imagine the literary giant working on his manuscripts in the quiet of this hidden street.
Whether you visit for its history, its picturesque charm, or the panoramic views from nearby castle walls, Golden Lane is a reminder that Prague’s magic often hides in its smallest corners.
